Jim and Lucas ran through the tall, wet grass frantically. A slim, dark figure followed them, tracking their every attempt to escape its boundless vision. The tall grass broke off into a thin and unmarked road, to which Jim pulled Lucas onto. The boys ran towards an abandoned, lonely mall which stood menacingly in the moonlight. The mall was slowly decaying, having been vandalized by countless people, with writing all over the walls. The glass doors were shattered and some chunks of the stone had crumbled off the walls and onto the ground. The mall used to be a place to gather and buy goods that would improve one’s life, now it was dead, decrepit, and silent. Jim and Lucas ran through the shattered doors and into the abandoned mall. The smack of their feet on the ground echoed off the walls and broke the unnatural silence of the mall. Junk was thrown everywhere, with shopping carts and trash flung haphazardly across the area. “Upstairs!” Jim yelled as he lead the Lucas up a stationary escalator and onto the second level. Moonlight broke through the skylights on the roof of the mall, lighting their way. Lucas looked behind him to see the dark figure still following at a steady pace, but this time lit by moonlight. The eerie figure was not solid, nor misty or airy, but something else. It was not walking or hovering, but rather sliding across the floor as if on ice. It held the shape of a tall human and had what looked like eyes. The eyes were pure white, like snow that has just fallen. Although it was dark, the eyes were like bright headlights. They pierced through the darkness and chilled Lucas’s body down to the bone. “Jim!” Lucas shouted, “It’s still following us!” “I know!” Lucas replied, “ Don’t focus on it, focus on getting away from it!” The figure increased its speed and began to gain on the boys. It knocked over obstacles in its way as if it had an invisible force field surrounding its form. Lucas still had his eyes locked on the figure and tripped over a shopping cart. The figure raised a long, dark hand towards Lucas and launched a projectile out of its body at him. The projectile was a small, red capsule that attached itself to Lucas’s leg. At this time Jim was hysterically trying to get Lucas onto his feet and back to running when he saw a black transparent film come out of the capsule and spread over Lucas’s leg. Lucas’s screams shattered the uncanny silence of the mall as he watched the sticky slime cover his leg and move to his upper body. Jim tried to pull the slime off him, but when his hands came into contact with the unknown substance, they began to burn as if someone had poured acid on his hands. Jim could only watch as it spread over Lucas’s whole body until it muffled his maniacal screams. Jim watched as the slime dissolve his friend’s body and retreated back inside the capsule. Jim only now realized that the figure had been standing next to him, watching Jim stare helplessly at his dying friend. Jim turned to face the figure in horror and fear. The figure cocked what could only be its head, and forced itself into Jim’s body through his mouth and nostrils. The shock of this knocked Jim onto the cold tile that he had been standing on. He slowly stood up and picked up the capsule that held whatever was left of Lucas. What walked out of the mall and into the cold, dark night, was not Jim.
