The Swap - Owen Albanese and Molly Sprong
It was finally time. I stood with my friends as we waited for the beginning of our 8th-grade graduation to start. Today’s the day. I finally moved on from the school I had been attending for almost a decade. I have had so many memories here (fun and sad), and it’s finally come to an end. After I go through these heavy oak doors, I will never walk through these halls as a student again. “There’s no stopping now” I thought to myself as I exhaled nervously. As people started proceeding in I got ready to follow in after them. My friend, Michael, started slowly walking down the aisle. It was now my turn. My heart begins to beat rapidly as I take my first step. Suddenly, I notice a banana peel being placed on the marble floor. Too focused on making it up to the altar, I step on the banana peel and time seems to stop. My legs came out from under me as I fall backward. My head smashed against the rigid marble as I lost vision and sense of the real world. Darkness enveloped my eyesight, and I slowly drifted away into a dreamlike state. I came back into conscience as I felt someone softly shake my arm. “Dwight, Dwight, honey nap time is over,” I opened my eyes to see a petite woman with straight blonde hair. Something about her reminded me of my old kindergarten teacher, Miss Angela. I suddenly came to the realization that she didn’t just remind me of my kindergarten teacher, she was my old kindergarten teacher. I pulled myself out of the cot and scanned the room. It was the exact same kindergarten room where I made the first of my memories at my school, nine years ago. It had the same painting of a sun smiling at a bunch of kids smiling back at it, the wooden desks surrounding the whiteboard, and Jim. My heart skipped a beat. It can’t be Jim. My Skechers lit up as I walked to the tall boy with shaggy brown hair. “Jim?” I asked. “What Dwight?” I froze. This can’t be Jim. He looks too young to resemble anything of Jim. “Dwight, what do you want?” questioned a squeaky voice which brought me back to reality. “Oh nothing,” I said almost in a whisper and walked to the mirror next to the door. As I stepped in front of the mirror, my face went pale. I looked about ten years younger. I was wearing light-up Skechers, camouflage cargo pants, and a t-shirt that my mom gave me for my seventh birthday. A black t-shirt with a grizzly bear painted on the front. I’m back in kindergarten. This can’t be possible. “Dwight honey, won’t you come over? It’s circle time!” said Miss Angela in a cheery voice. “Okay,” I said in a tone almost unable to hear. As I sat criss-cross applesauce on the blue rug, I planned to get out of this nightmare. As Miss Angela went on and on about the alphabet and primary colors, I made a slip on another banana peel to reverse the effect that it had on me last time. But until snack time, I was stuck in my inferior kindergarten body. What to do? What to do? Suddenly, I remembered that I always kept my Nintendo DS in my backpack in kindergarten! I asked Miss Angela if I could go to the bathroom and ran to my Star Trek backpack. I unzipped the backpack and searched through the orange interior. Finally, I came across my DS. I hid the DS behind my back and ran to the bathroom and played it until snack time. Finally, snack time had come upon us. I reached into my lunch pail and grabbed the banana peel. I threw the peel on the concrete and I hoped for the best. I jumped upward and fell on the slippery surface. Like previously at my graduation, I lost all control of my body as I slipped and my head hit the hard surface. Once again, everything went black. Suddenly, I was woken by firm hands shaking my body. It was Nurse Phyllis, the elderly yet experienced caregiver at this school ever since dinosaurs roamed the Earth. “Dwight! Dwight? Are you okay?” I sat up, confused and dazed. An unexpected jolt of pain coursed through my the back of my head. This caused me to start seeing blotchy, black spots in my vision. My head started getting woozy and I fainted once more. Suddenly, a blinding light started to envelop me. I hit the ground again and just laid there. My best pal, Michael, brought to my feet. “Diggity dog! Are you okay dude?” I looked around and saw everyone staring at me in awe. “Well,” I wheezed out in laughter, “I guess you could say I took a blast from the past!” |
